Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD’s) workshop to investigate the consequences for maintenance personnel using the EU-OSHA Guidance Tool

The main scope of the workshop is the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders with the use of body mapping technique.

The main scope of the workshop is the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders with the use of body mapping technique.

The trainer runs both body and hazard mapping sessions in the context of different workshops. The participating workers (men and women), divided into smaller mixed groups accordingly, will be asked to fill out a specific flipchart body diagram and a questionnaire. Upon completion of each workshop, all the material is gathered for evaluation, in order to outline the corresponding conclusions and statistical results.

The workshops consist of two different sessions:

    •          The first is about the body mapping of the work-related musculoskeletal disorders and symptoms.

    •          The second focuses on the workplace hazard mapping. The different types of hazards identified in a workplace, are presented through a corresponding questionnaire also handed out to the participants during the second part of each workshop.

    Asset Performance Management versus Safety

An aging asset base is a main trend in the Maintenance sector. Aging assets bring both opportunities and risks. On the one hand, it is relatively advantageous to let the assets that have been written off continue to run for as long as possible without making major investments. This can generate money, which is why the focus will soon be on keeping the existing (capital intensive) assets operational for as long as possible. On the other hand, obsolete assets bring a number of disadvantages. In general, obsolete assets are less efficient, less reliable, less 'green' and perhaps even less safe.

Furthermore, the continuous sharpening of regulations on safety constantly create new challenges for asset owners and service providers. It is therefore always a complicated puzzle when it has to be decided when a (capital-intensive) asset should be taken out of production for a large-scale and time-consuming replacement investment. Is that why we opt for lifespan extension?

How does this relate to the safety of the asset, people and business operations? TOP professionals search for the answers together and with the public.

    Organizational Qualitative Culture Assessment

Safety Culture gaps comes largely from the fact that there is a different perception among the various organizational levels on how to implement a Health & Safety Management System. The workshop will give the opportunity to the participants to use the innovative Six Pillar Tool to qualitatively assess their Organization’s Safety Culture level.

After a brief presentation of the Tool’s contextual approach, each participant, depending on their relevant organizational line position, will be supplied with a questionnaire which will be called to answer to the best of their knowledge. The questionnaire comprises six sets of targeted questions corresponding to the Pillars of Management Commitment, Total Employee Involvement, Effective Communication, Documentation, Management of Change and Continual Improvement. The Workshop serves not only as a benchmarking but also as a training module since each participant, going through the questions, identifies the management elements that, if implemented, may lead to effective accident prevention.

    Robots doing maintenance?

Companies are drastically increasing their automation level, both in routinary tasks and in non routinary tasks. In this scenario, robotics seeks for new fields of application, not necessarily related with productive tasks. Moreover, reliability will be the key transversal function to be empowered within these "automated” organizations and Artificial Intelligence will provide (in fact, it is providing…) robots with new analytics and decision-making capabilities that boost their autonomy.

Robotics has been widely used in the manufacturing processes, but in other activities such as maintenance their use is barely limited to simple inspections. New fields of robotics applications can be developed to increase the operational reliability of assets.

In the presentation we propose, we will expose the several potential application of robotics to maintenance activities and, in general, to increase assets reliability, along the whole reliability value chain (design, construction, start-up,  operations, maintenance and dismantling). Also, the current state of the art of autonomous robots will be discussed under a pragmatic point of view, and specific use cases will be explained, such as inspections rounds performed by robots or their polyvalence and flexibility to alternate supervisión, safety and inspection tasks within a manufacturing enviroment.

Problem Solving & Root Cause Analyse with more speed, more effectiveness and more fun!

Think about the main characteristics of a F1 pitstop: They are short and effective, caused by crystal clear roles and tasks, excellent preparation, very well trained routines and an optimal and visually designed workplace (the pit). Why not use those same standards if an engineer cannot solve a problem on its own, but requires co-operation with colleagues?

Typically, problem solving with a group tends to have: long discussions, participants jumping to conclusions and solutions, a trial and error approach, ineffective communication and handover, etc. To minimize downtime and costs, and to maximize customer satisfaction, you need a faster and more effective approach for Problem Solving & Root Cause Analysis. You need a Problem Solving Pitstop approach!

Predictive maintenance plays a vital role in enhancing the productivity of machine tools in the 4.0 manufacturing context. The management of the replacement of parts (including the tools) needs to rely on a global procedure including basic steps like Failure Mode and Effect Analysis.

Detection, diagnosis and prognosis (residual useful lifetime) may be addressed by reliability-based approaches (Weibull and Cox models), physical degradation models, or measurement data driven approaches using machine learning techniques. Results obtained for tool wear will be presented and discussed with pro and cons of each approach. The presentation will conclude on the need for decision aid platforms as the maintenance management cannot be reduced to the reliability issues and should include sustainability aspects as well.

Social and cognitive digital twins. A metaverse approach

A digital twin is not a static model but a responsive system connecting physical and digital systems, with numerous potential applications in industry. Other terms for digital twin are digital shadow, digital mirror, digital model, and digital avatar.

However, this is a one-to-one digital twinning process, and industry demands a more attractive proposition i.e. the creation of a virtual scenario where virtual instances gather together with the twins of real ones. We call this scenario the 'metaverse,’ a digital replica of our reality where all physical assets are twinned along with entities that only exist in the digital dimension.  The metaverse is the digital dimension where the digital entities interact. The metaverse is the expansion of DTs with more content and social meaning.

Importantly, the metaverse has a scalable environment that can accommodate many entities, thus reinforcing social meaning among the DTs coexisting in the space, immersed in that space and participating in it. That is why maintainers have to keep an eye on the evolution of DTs and how they transfer those replicas to the metaverse, as degradation mechanisms, maintenance plans, and prognostics will seriously affect the DT once it starts interacting in the digital arena with its counterparts.

Human Factor; Opportunities instead of Problems

The Maintenance workforce has grown again this year. However, there are challenges facing the sector. For example, the increasing ageing of the population is causing a high average age (46 years), an increase in the number of vacancies (15 vacancies per maintenance organisation) and an increase in the outflow (8.9%). Of the outflow, a large group (43.5%) leaves the organisation because of retirement.

In the coming years, efforts should be made to increase the inflow of new personnel. One way to achieve this is by attracting more women (current share 8.4%) and more people with a migrant background into Maintenance. Furthermore, efforts should be made to retain these groups within the maintenance organisation. The rosy picture of the sector is that there is increasing confidence in recruiting enough staff. 60% of companies say they are confident about attracting enough technical staff and 71% say they are confident about attracting enough technological staff. The outflow due to dissatisfaction has decreased (35.5%), which means that Management and Maintenance is an attractive sector to work in.

Capturing and finding technical personnel is an European problem. What solutions are there? The professionals share best practices with each other and with the public.

Asset Management is at its best when it is able to contribute to Operations and their business drivers such as Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO

It is very difficult, if not impossible, to positively impact the Operational Excellence performance metrics in an industrial operation without an effective asset management program.

Organizations will be hard pressed to achieve greater Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), extend the life of their assets, maximize throughput, increase operating margins, or lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) without a modern (digital), comprehensive and integrated asset management approach.

LNS Research studies and weekly briefings from both end users and software suppliers, indicate that adding OT/Time Series data to APM predictive / prescriptive analytics models is trending up significantly. Specifically, these software tools automate the extraction of industrial data from historians, IoT sensors, and operational technology (OT) systems to provide "real-time” condition, anomaly detection, and alarm data, greatly enhancing the accuracy of the models.

Bob will take the stage together with MaxGrip and the senior manager of an industrial company to share his vision.
